Celebrate Your Birthday: Unique Ideas for a Special Day

Written on

Reflecting on Celebrations

I was fortunate to be born during the summer, a time when school was out, and close enough to the Fourth of July that family gatherings often coincided with my birthday. Even when I became a teacher, I only had to work on my special day once in my life. So, luck has certainly played a role in my birthday experiences, and I’m not complaining!

As a child, I delighted in birthday festivities, gifts, and cards containing money, just like many others. I would graciously read the card first, focusing on the sentiment before acknowledging the cash. I especially loved cards featuring age wheels, eagerly anticipating each birthday as I aged.

Instead of expressing regret over the increasing numbers, I find myself missing those age wheels on adult cards. To me, age signifies a journey and a badge of honor. I’ll proudly set the age to 63 come next July, reflecting on my experiences and looking forward to new ones.

Ways to Celebrate Your Birthday

When it comes to celebrating your birthday, the first step is to decide how you want to honor this special day. Then, take action to make it happen.

What brings you joy? For me, being near water is essential. I often spend a few hours kayaking on a local pond or enjoying a beach getaway. I've enjoyed catching the latest blockbuster at the cinema or simply relaxing in my backyard with a stack of magazines. If you’re working, consider taking a personal day to indulge in your favorite activities. If your actual birthday is busy, celebrate on another day—it’s the sentiment that counts.

Acknowledge Your Milestones

View your birthday as a significant milestone. Reflect on what you've achieved over the past year. I find it helpful to dedicate time a week prior to my birthday to journal about my accomplishments. I cast a wide net in recognizing my achievements. Did I write 50 articles for Medium? Absolutely an accomplishment! Did I tidy up the basement closet? Yes! Even small victories, like learning to play pickleball or rearranging my living room, deserve recognition. Don’t overlook the challenges you’ve faced—jot those down too, whether it's caring for a parent or helping your children find their footing.

Look Ahead: Setting Goals

I keep a dream board in my home office, last updated when I turned 62. Life’s challenges have kept some of my goals on hold, but I still aspire to walk across the George Washington Bridge, view all the James Bond films, complete my poetry notebook, take a Circle Line tour, and master the drone that eluded me two Christmases ago. I also plan to add new ambitions, like taking the Jeopardy! test and committing to deep-cleaning one room each month.

Treat Yourself to a Gift

Consider pampering yourself on your birthday. Whether it’s booking a massage, splurging on a new shirt, or acquiring a stunning metal sculpture for your yard, self-gifting is entirely appropriate. Gift cards to your favorite restaurants or stores are a great way to ensure you treat yourself. Whether it’s jewelry, books, or shoes, indulge in something you’d love to receive. Be your own best friend, especially on your birthday.

Indulge in Your Favorite Treat

Typically, a birthday cake is presented, but does it truly satisfy your cravings? Personally, I love ice cream cake, and while I enjoy sharing it, I make sure to treat myself to something extra delicious later on. For me, it’s a brownie paired with chocolate marshmallow ice cream. Perhaps your favorite is a funnel cake from the boardwalk, a fresh chocolate chip cookie from the mall, or even a lavish cheesecake slice. Whatever your indulgence, make sure to enjoy every bite. And don’t forget to make a wish!

Your birthday is a unique day dedicated to you. Embrace your individuality and reign as your own monarch for the day.
