# 3 Common Habits You Still Do, Even When You Know They're Harmful

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery

Growing up, I was just an ordinary kid, striving to blend in and avoid drawing attention to myself. I adapted to different situations like a chameleon, always choosing the right words. However, my life took a transformative turn during my final year of high school when I discovered the joy of learning languages. This new passion opened up a world of possibilities, and since then, I’ve been known as “the language guy” among my peers.

In 2017, I stumbled upon the self-improvement movement, and it profoundly impacted my life. I became more content and embraced my unique traits. My curiosity flourished, leading me to prioritize productivity and learning, surpassing even my love for languages. I resumed reading, began meditating and journaling, and took up new skills like basic programming and origami. For the first time, I committed to a serious fitness routine.

Over the years, I’ve become aware of my negative habits but still struggle to break free from some of them. If you find yourself in a similar situation—whether just starting on your self-improvement journey or feeling stuck—I hope this article will help you identify some of the detrimental habits we tend to overlook.

Section 1.1: Prioritizing Tasks

One of the most significant advantages technology has given us is accessibility. I recall the challenges I faced trying to find subtitles in foreign languages 15 years ago. Now, with a simple browser extension, you can enjoy dual subtitles on platforms like Netflix. How incredible is that?

However, technology has also made it easier to waste time. Instead of having to turn on the TV and grab a controller, it’s all too easy to pick up your phone and dive into games like Candy Crush from the comfort of your bed. The problem arises when gaming becomes your first activity of the day, as it can drain your creative energy during peak hours.

Even if you consider yourself a night owl, morning light helps wake your body by suppressing melatonin. Think back to those urgent projects you tackled first thing in the morning; despite dreading them at the time, you likely felt accomplished by day’s end. The key takeaway? Prioritize your important tasks before indulging in games.

Section 1.2: The Cost of Overcommitment

In the past, I was a yes-man, always eager to accept every invitation out of fear of missing out (FOMO). This tendency often left me feeling drained and overwhelmed. As Albert-László Barabási wisely pointed out, "Time is our most valuable non-renewable resource," and we must learn to prioritize how we spend it.

When you say yes to everything, you sacrifice your own time and well-being. It’s essential to recognize when to say no. Although it can be difficult, it’s crucial to reserve time for yourself amid societal pressures to please others.

Chapter 2: The Double-Edged Sword of Technology

The first video, "Don't be That Guy - Bad Board Game Habits!" offers insights into common gaming pitfalls that can lead to wasted time. By understanding these habits, you can begin to make better choices.

As much as I appreciate technology, I also harbor a deep-seated frustration with it. Growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, I remember a time when we didn’t immediately look everything up on our phones. Now, my go-to tool for quick information is YouTube, which has sadly morphed into a major addiction. In the last week alone, I spent 41 hours on the platform—equivalent to a full-time job!

This obsession can manifest in various forms, whether it’s binge-watching Netflix or scrolling through social media. While these tools have their benefits, relying on them excessively can be detrimental to your productivity. To combat this, aim to limit your usage and find alternative activities.

The second video, "You're Not Stupid: How to Easily Learn Difficult Things," emphasizes effective learning strategies that can help you break free from distractions and focus on personal growth.

Section 2.1: Overcoming Bad Habits

Let’s face it: breaking bad habits is challenging. They often creep into our lives without us noticing, and it can be hard to resist the urge to indulge. For instance, many smokers realize they are lighting up only after the first puff. Similarly, you might find yourself scrolling through YouTube or attending pointless meetings without a second thought.

So, how can we overcome these habits? It all begins with identifying your reasons for wanting to change. You might have already recognized that certain habits are counterproductive, but understanding your motivations is key to making lasting changes.

Section 2.2: Finding Alternatives

Desiring to quit a habit is a great first step, but without a suitable replacement, you’re unlikely to succeed. The habit loop consists of a cue, a craving, and a reward. For example, if you wake up and immediately reach for your phone, that cue triggers the craving for a game, and the satisfaction you feel reinforces the cycle.

To break the loop, you can either eliminate the cue or replace it with a healthier habit. For instance, if you keep your phone out of reach when you wake up, you’ll be less tempted to start your day gaming. Alternatively, consider swapping your phone for a book, journal, or workout gear.

As you explore new paths, keep track of your experiences in a notebook. Document your feelings before and after the urge arises, as well as your successes and setbacks. This self-awareness will help you identify patterns and develop strategies for resisting temptation.

Final Thoughts

Breaking free from bad habits is no easy feat, and it’s common to slip back into old patterns. Personally, I’ve struggled with my YouTube usage and am currently working to regain control. Remember, it’s perfectly human to falter; the important thing is to keep striving for improvement.

If you’re determined to stop squandering your time and energy on unfulfilling activities, it will take effort and commitment. Best of luck on your journey to self-improvement!
