# Creating a Meaningful Life: Beyond the Search for Purpose

Chapter 1: Understanding the Illusion of Purpose
The internet is overflowing with young men in their 20s and 30s sharing deep, spiritual quotes about "finding your life’s purpose." They present guides that appear appealing but often lack concrete significance. Let's face it: how does vague advice like “pursue your passions” genuinely impact your life?
Here’s the reality — you won't uncover your purpose by adhering to any “seven essential steps” suggested by some self-proclaimed guru on social media. You don’t need to embark on a six-month journey in India, scale Mount Kilimanjaro, or adopt a monastic lifestyle for a month (though such experiences could be enriching).
Your life's purpose isn't something to be discovered; it’s something you must create.
Here's how to get started.
Section 1.1: Define Your Arete
“First, say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” — Epictetus
While there isn't a direct translation for the Greek term arete in English, we can understand it as striving to reach one’s full potential. Jonathan Haidt, in his book The Happiness Hypothesis, illustrates that the arete of a knife is to cut effectively, while the arete of an eye is to see clearly. It’s clear-cut, but here comes the challenging part…
What is your arete?
Before attempting to answer that, consider this thought from Dan Sullivan: “The definition of hell is: Your last day on Earth, the person you became meets the person you could have become.”
You know yourself better than anyone. Deep down, you understand your capabilities. If you close your eyes, you can visualize that ideal version of yourself.
Now, open your journal and outline this person's:
- Major achievements
- Physical appearance
- Family situation
- Core values
- Financial status
This description encapsulates your arete.
Section 1.2: Impacting the World
“Life is brief — the essence of life is to cultivate good character and contribute to the common good.” — Marcus Aurelius
This may seem daunting for a single individual, but it is entirely achievable. You don’t need to be a billionaire or a world leader to make a difference. You can enact change through the Stoic practice known as the circles of concern, a concept introduced by Hierocles. This principle encourages empathy and understanding of others' perspectives.
Marcus Aurelius advises us to “Honor the gods and care for one another.” You can uphold this legacy by engaging in simple, meaningful acts:
- Share your wisdom, both online and offline
- Express gratitude for others' contributions
- Treat your partner to a lovely dinner
- Be present with your children
- Call your grandmother
By doing so, you are continuously transforming the world. Everything is interconnected — when you uplift someone’s day, they are more likely to pass that positivity on. What may seem trivial to you could mean the world to someone else.
However, remember that your words and actions hold great power.
Reflecting on my own experiences, at 17, I aspired to become a professional football player. While I had many memorable games, what stands out is an ordinary match where a single mistake cost us dearly. Instead of receiving encouragement from a respected teammate, I was met with disdain: “This kid is a joke.”
He likely forgot his words, but they devastated my self-esteem. Recognize that your expressions and small gestures can profoundly impact others' lives — wield them wisely.
Chapter 2: Simplifying Your Journey
“The fool, with all his other faults, has this also: he is always getting ready to live.” — Seneca
Overthinking has become a hallmark of our generation. When Alexander the Great faced the challenge of untying the Gordian knot, he didn’t deliberate for days; he simply sliced through it with his sword. While this act might not have been particularly clever, it effectively served its purpose.
This illustrates that sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best.
You already know your strengths. Forge your own purpose by honing your skills, working diligently, and concentrating on a few key areas. Transform your life into a game, conquering challenges one at a time. While you pursue your ambitions, remember to support those around you and contribute to the greater good.
No one else will undertake this journey for you.
