Creating Space in Your Home Office for Mental Clarity

A little over a month ago, I embarked on a personal experiment to address the overwhelming atmosphere in my home office. As I pushed the limits of working from home, the space began to feel more oppressive. By the end of February, I realized it was time for a change.

Previously, I shared insights on how 3D printing enhanced my agility. It dawned on me that the chaos in my environment mirrored the chaos in my mind. While I’m no expert, it’s clear there’s a relationship between our surroundings and our mental state. A cluttered home can reflect a cluttered mind, creating a vicious cycle that needs breaking to avoid feeling overwhelmed. If relocating to a larger space isn’t an option, you’re left with two choices: continue living in disorder or take the initiative to reorganize your surroundings.

When you first move into a new place, everything is fresh and tidy. You buy furniture to keep your belongings organized. Over time, however, your space fills up with items you no longer use, leading to an accumulation of "stuff." As you acquire more belongings, you inevitably buy larger storage solutions to conceal the clutter. Unfortunately, this is not a sustainable approach, as storage space is finite. Eventually, when your belongings overflow, you resort to using boxes, creating a hidden collection of things you no longer need but can’t bear to part with.

Psychologically, everyone has a limit. When the clutter becomes overwhelming, a healthy individual will start to declutter, while others may fall into hoarding behaviors. You might think that as long as you can’t see the mess, it doesn’t affect you, but clutter still occupies valuable mental and physical space.

In the past, when I ran out of storage, my solution was to buy more furniture. But as my work-from-home situation evolved, the lack of space became glaringly apparent. In my home country, there’s a tradition called "spring decluttering," where people take the opportunity to clear out their homes after winter. This practice brings a sense of relief and renewal as people dispose of unwanted items.

As a child, I loved these weeks, often finding treasures in discarded piles. As an adult, I found satisfaction in throwing out years of accumulated junk. Each time I cleared out old items, I felt a weight lifted, allowing me to create space for new experiences.

Chapter 2: Embracing Minimalism

Instead of expanding my storage solutions, I decided to downsize. I eliminated most of my wardrobes and replaced them with fewer, smaller units. Remarkably, everything I actually use now fits perfectly, and the excess has vanished since there’s no longer a place to hide it. This reduction in storage has not only created a more open living space but has also made my home feel brighter and more expansive.

Now, tidying up takes just 30 minutes instead of two hours, leading to a happier, less stressful environment. My thoughts are clearer and more organized.
