Embracing Little Conflict: A Journey into Consciousness

Written on

Chapter 1: The Nature of Little Conflict

In my perspective, there’s minimal discord between scientific inquiry and spiritual contemplation. This includes the so-called “hard problem” of consciousness, which questions whether our awareness arises from physical processes in the brain or if it’s a fundamental aspect of the universe itself. Some argue that all things inherently possess a degree of awareness. It’s not that I’m avoiding a stance on these issues, or that I lack a preferred viewpoint. In fact, my inclination toward a panpsychist perspective is apparent to those familiar with my writings. This viewpoint is shaped by my profound experiences of aliveness and my sense of belonging to a world that acknowledges my presence.

However, I acknowledge the possibility that I could be mistaken. Ultimately, it doesn’t hold much significance for me. My experiences resonate deeply, existing independently of justification or rationale. They simply are, regardless of how this connection to existence originated.

Science supports my sense of awe towards the universe, from the initial spark of energy to the unfolding of space and time, culminating in the formation of matter. Why would it astonish me that such a process could lead to the emergence of consciousness? Evolution, too, suggests that nature’s random selection has the potential to foster awareness within its complexity. This is not only plausible but likely, and it does not undermine the richness of my conscious experience.

Thus, I find little conflict, if any, and what truly matters is my gratitude for this moment. Right now, I am alive, aware, and filled with joy to be consciously engaged with the world around me. Science reveals that this reality need not have unfolded as it has; even the slightest change in endless variables could have resulted in an entirely different universe—or none at all. Yet, here we are, sharing a collective consciousness, a gift that enables us to cherish the world we inhabit. This too is a miracle, serving as the foundation for genuine awakening.

I exist, and that realization is sufficient for me, regardless of how it came to be.

Peace, Eric
