Embracing My Unique Journey: Why Average Lives Inspire Me

Chapter 1: The Allure of the Average Life

Lately, I find myself reflecting on the lives of my friends who have settled down—getting married and starting families.

This realization often fills me with a sense of unease. Am I falling behind? However, I quickly remind myself that having children was never my aspiration.

I sometimes feel a twinge of envy towards those living what I perceive to be average lives. That notion can be appealing—if I were truly content with a life that’s deemed average. But I suspect that many of us struggle to feel satisfied with the mundane.

Certainly, there are individuals who find joy in leading an ordinary life, fulfilling societal milestones, and living comfortably. Yet, it's essential to clarify that being married or having children doesn’t inherently equate to an average existence.

For those of us who are writers on platforms like Medium, or even readers of this piece, the desire for more from life is often a shared sentiment. Personally, I'm committed to pursuing my aspirations, no matter the cost.

Things I Can’t Accept Indefinitely

  • Working for someone else
  • Remaining stagnant in my current situation
  • Staying in one location for life
  • Ceasing to learn
  • Capping my income potential
  • Committing to a single job role

It’s crucial to note that not everyone leading an average life is content with all the points mentioned above. Yet, I’d wager that many are at peace with at least a few of them.

Rapper J. Cole expressed a similar envy towards those who lead a simple life, stating, “I admire individuals who don’t possess intense desires or visions. They enjoy a peaceful existence, finding satisfaction in their jobs, families, and overall life.” His words resonate with me deeply.

If you identify with this sentiment, I think it's beautiful. I often find myself envious of those who can appreciate a simpler, average life.

The Illusion of Perfection

Watching friends transition into marriage and parenthood can create an illusion that they have everything figured out. These societal markers often serve as a means of seeking validation from others, rather than reflecting true contentment.

Social media can paint a picture of happiness, but it doesn’t necessarily reveal the sacrifices made behind the scenes.

Having children comes with significant commitments. Personal dreams and ambitions often take a backseat, as financial stability for the child becomes the primary focus. This may require taking on additional hours or even forgoing the chance to pursue new opportunities.

These life-changing decisions demand time and dedication, leading to sacrifices that those of us without such responsibilities are fortunate enough to avoid. I strive to appreciate this freedom.

The Gift of Not Settling

I hold different aspirations than my friends who choose traditional paths. I love working with children, yet I’ve never felt the urge to have one of my own.

What I cherish about my role is the ability to send the child home after our time together, freeing me from the weight of parental responsibility. This sense of relief is invaluable.

While I may not conform to societal norms, I genuinely celebrate my friends’ happiness in their choices. I simply have distinct goals that drive me, and that’s perfectly acceptable.

Being unfulfilled with my current situation motivates me to elevate my life. This non-contentment fuels my ambition to improve, grow my business, develop my side hustle, increase my income, and chase my dreams.

Embracing this feeling of discontent can be empowering; it’s all about shifting your perspective.

Reminding Myself of My True Aspirations

Whenever I ponder whether a simpler life might be easier, I must remind myself of a crucial truth: I never desired a conventional job. Even if it feels challenging now, I know that I wouldn’t be happier in a traditional role.

I chose the path of self-employment because it fulfills me and provides purpose. Choosing a standard career would mean abandoning that dream.

This journey is far from easy; however, dreaming big is worthwhile. It requires courage and sacrifice to pursue your passions. It’s all about understanding what truly aligns with your identity.

I’m grateful for the path I’ve chosen, even as I find myself envious of those who lead average lives.
