Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: 11 Managerial Commitments

Written on

Introduction to Leadership Promises

I felt compelled to share Matthew Rech's insightful "11 Promises From A Manager," as it provides essential, motivational, and contemporary advice for both aspiring and established leaders.

For those transitioning into management, these promises can serve as foundational principles. Existing leaders can use them as a self-assessment tool or as a reminder of the characteristics that define outstanding leadership. While various leadership styles exist, some elements consistently contribute to success, and many of those are encapsulated in the 11 commitments outlined below.

Experiences with diverse leadership styles are common in every job. Many leaders fall somewhere between effective and ineffective. If more leaders embraced empathy and adhered to these 11 commitments, workplaces could become more compassionate, enlightened, peaceful, joyful, and ultimately more productive.

Commitments for Effective Leadership

  1. Consistent One-on-Ones: We will hold a weekly one-on-one meeting. I promise never to cancel, but you are free to do so if needed; it’s your time.
  2. Meeting Agendas: The agenda for our one-on-one will be included in the invite so we can keep track of essential topics. However, you’re welcome to discuss whatever is on your mind.
  3. Purposeful Meetings: When I set up a meeting, I will always clarify its purpose in advance. I will not arrange meetings without an agenda.
  4. Transparent Communication: Whenever I reach out to you, I will greet you and explain the reason for my message. There will be no uncertainty or small talk.
  5. Direct Updates: Major news or announcements that affect you or your team will be communicated directly in our one-on-one meetings, rather than in large gatherings.
  6. Timely Feedback: You will receive feedback from me promptly, ensuring that there are no surprises during your performance reviews.
  7. Trust in Time Management: I trust you to manage your own schedule. You don’t need to get my approval before taking time away from work.
  8. Outcome-Focused Work: Your work will be done your way. My emphasis is on results, not methods. Once we agree on our goals, how to achieve them is up to you. If I need to suggest an approach, I will provide an example.
  9. Team Cohesion: A team thrives when its members support one another. Please look to your colleagues for opportunities to help, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. We are not solitary workers.
  10. Open Communication: I trust you to communicate directly with my manager or other senior leaders about any relevant issues without needing my approval. I won’t react negatively to this.
  11. Proper Attribution: I will ensure that credit is given where it’s due, recognizing your contributions and those of your team. I will accurately represent our roles when discussing achievements with senior management.

If these commitments resonate with you, I hope you can reciprocate by sharing one vital element: the truth. I want your honest feedback, your thoughts on when I might be mistaken, and your suggestions for improvement. I will always listen attentively and respond without defensiveness. Trusting one another will enable us to learn and grow together, which is the collaborative environment I aspire to create.
