Section 1.1: The Awkward Silence Dilemma

Just before writing this piece, I finished a two-hour class, during which one of my classmates faced an excruciatingly long pause after sharing her thoughts. While I found it amusing as an observer, I could tell she was deeply uncomfortable with the situation. Although instructors and peers strive to cultivate a supportive environment in these virtual meetings, the anxiety around speaking up is palpable. This is arguably one of the primary challenges with Zoom and similar platforms.

The inherent lag and hesitation during conversations often contribute to this awkwardness. It's astonishing to think that while humanity has achieved the monumental task of sending people to the moon and back, we still struggle to facilitate smooth, real-time dialogue in video chats. This seems illogical, especially as technologies like 5G are heralded as groundbreaking advancements. Prioritizing seamless communication in video conferencing should take precedence over adding new features. Personally, I would readily invest in a lag-free version of Zoom!

Zoom plays a crucial role in the lives of millions, if not billions, of users worldwide. I am not advocating for the elimination of Zoom; rather, I believe that both Zoom and other video conferencing platforms have significant improvements to make if they wish to establish a viable long-term business model. Currently, the experience of video chatting can be quite awkward, especially when managing large groups within a single meeting.
