Focus on Honoring Your Promises to Yourself

Chapter 1: The Importance of Self-Commitment
Fulfilling promises made to oneself is incredibly rewarding. Throughout much of my life, I struggled with self-doubt, leading to a tumultuous emotional journey. It's time to confront these issues and take action before they overwhelm me.
I discovered a straightforward yet challenging solution: follow through on your commitments. Be true to your word, not just to others, but to yourself. We often excel at keeping promises to friends and family; many people I know are reliable when it comes to fulfilling their commitments to others.
However, we frequently fall short when it comes to honoring the promises we make to ourselves, which undermines our self-confidence. I'm guilty of this too, as I'm sure many of you are.
Section 1.1: Breaking Self-Promises
Consider the commitments you’ve made to yourself. Perhaps you resolved to stop drinking but ended up downing three beers at a gathering. You aimed to rise early on weekends for a workout, yet you sleep in and indulge in takeout while binge-watching shows. You intended to read for thirty minutes daily, only to find yourself scrolling through YouTube instead. You wanted to explore your artistic side, purchasing supplies only for them to gather dust in a corner. You aspired to write, spending hours learning about the craft without ever putting pen to paper.
I’ve experienced this cycle of guilt firsthand. I was stuck in a loop of disappointment until I recognized that I was breaking my own promises. I knew I had to initiate change.
Subsection 1.1.1: Taking Action
When I decided to take action, I focused on writing. By sharing my work publicly, I created a sense of accountability that inspired me to write consistently. This led to the development of a daily writing habit, allowing me to finally keep my word to myself.
While I won’t claim this is a magical fix for instant self-confidence, taking action is undoubtedly a step in the right direction. Fulfilling promises to yourself is an expression of self-respect that no one can take away from you.
