iOS 15.6: A Major Upgrade Worth Noticing
Written on
New Features in iOS 15.6
If I were in charge of overseeing the rollout of iOS updates, I would have recommended implementing all the exciting features directly into iOS 16, rather than distributing them through a minor update like iOS 15.6. However, it appears that those in charge have different priorities, which is quite encouraging! We can look forward to some fantastic new functionalities in the upcoming iOS 15.6, the first update to iOS 15 after the beta release of iOS 16.
Let’s explore the noteworthy features of iOS 15.6 up to its Beta 5 version (the next iteration will likely be the release candidate, followed by the official launch).
Section 1.1: Apple Music Improvement
As depicted in the screenshot, an interesting issue arose when I installed the Apple Music app from the App Store; it unexpectedly replaced ‘Settings’ in my dock. Normally, newly installed applications only offer two options: to access the App Library or remain on the Home Screen. However, it seems Apple Music was causing a disturbance by displacing a random app in the dock and pushing it to the Home Screen, primarily targeting third-party music applications like Spotify. Fortunately, this bug is addressed in iOS 15.6. Check out the detailed screenshot shared by Aaron Zollo on Twitter to see this in action.
Section 1.2: Enhanced Safari Experience
You may have encountered this frustrating scenario: after clearing your Safari history, the tabs you thought were closed reappear and clutter your history again. To tackle this, iOS 15.6 introduces a helpful popup that appears after clearing your Safari history and website data, asking, “Do you also want to close all tabs?” with options to either "Close Tabs" or "Keep Tabs." The screenshot shown is from iOS 16 Beta 2, but this feature also appeared in iOS 15.5 Beta 4, ensuring users have clarity about their tab management.
Section 1.3: Communication Safety Upgrade
For those who have enabled parental controls for their children, navigating to Settings > Screen Time > Communication Safety will reveal a new option named "Improve Communication Safety" in iOS 15.6. This feature anonymously transmits relevant analytics and usage data to enhance Apple's services aimed at safeguarding children. While this feature is off by default, it is encouraged to enable it to support Apple's initiative without compromising privacy.
Section 1.4: Redesigned Subscriptions Layout
Apple has made a significant update to the Subscriptions interface, which was applied remotely, meaning it doesn't require a software update. If your iPhone is running iOS 15.5 or a newer version, head to Settings > Your Name > Subscriptions to see the newly organized layout. All subscriptions are now displayed in separate boxes, offering a more visually appealing experience. If any subscription has expired, a prominent "Renew" button will appear, along with clear options to "Cancel Subscription" or "Change Subscription Plan."
Chapter 2: Additional Enhancements
New features continue to emerge in iOS 15.6:
- Home App: Users can now report junk invites for controlling home accessories, allowing for better management of unsolicited requests.
- Find My App: With the introduction of new MacBook Air and Pro models, the Find My app showcases redesigned icons tailored for these devices.
