Living Life Without Regrets: A Missed Opportunity with Diana Ross

Chapter 1: A Memorable Day
Eighteen years ago, on a Sunday, my grandson is set to celebrate his eighteenth birthday. Just hours before he entered the world, I enjoyed a lavish lunch with my daughter and niece, taking in the stunning views of the Malibu coastline. The meal was extravagant, with an array of delicate appetizers that left my wallet as empty as my stomach.
However, the breathtaking sight of the Pacific Ocean made it worthwhile. The moment became even more special when one of my favorite artists, Diana Ross, made her entrance. Adorned in an oversized hat that accentuated her voluminous hair, she took a seat at the neighboring table.
She was so close I could almost reach out and touch her—yet it felt like miles away.
Growing up, The Supremes were the soundtrack of my youth. Their timeless songs evoke memories of carefree summer nights spent cruising down Van Nuys Blvd with friends. I can still hear the echo of “Baby love, my baby love, I need you oh how I need you…”
Oh, how I wish I could turn back time—not to relive my high school days, but to that lunch almost two decades ago. I was on the verge of approaching Diana to express my gratitude for her music when I caught a warning glance from my daughter. “DO NOT talk to her,” she seemed to say.
Given that my daughter was about to give birth, and I could see her hormones were in overdrive, I obliged. I walked right past Diana, missing my only chance to connect with her.
To this day, I regret not acting on my instincts. I didn't intend to sit with her, raid her watermelon salad, or devour her ahi tuna tartar. I simply wanted to convey my appreciation.
Since that moment, I’ve made a promise to myself: I will never hesitate to express my feelings again. If I care about someone, I’ll let them know. If I feel like dressing younger, I’ll do it. If I wish to spend the day lost in a book, that’s exactly what I’ll do.
Of course, I’ll avoid saying anything that could hurt someone’s feelings. But I’d much rather risk looking foolish than carry the weight of regret.
So, Diana, should you come across this, know that your music has been the backdrop of my high school memories, and I should have shared that with you eighteen years ago.
