Insights on Mastering Your Remote Google Internship Experience

Chapter 1: Introduction to Remote Internships
Embarking on a remote internship journey can be both exciting and challenging. Reflecting on my own experience during my business internship at Google in the summer of 2021, I’d like to share three key takeaways that can help you thrive in similar situations.
Section 1.1: The Importance of Proactive Communication
In a typical office setting, spontaneous conversations and learning moments happen naturally. However, while working remotely, it is crucial to take the initiative in your communication efforts. This involves establishing clear communication channels with your supervisor.
Here are my recommendations:
- Schedule 2–3 meetings weekly with your supervisor. Come prepared with any questions or issues you need to address.
- Arrange one-on-one meetings with your colleagues to foster relationships and collaboration.
- Be vocal about any uncertainties regarding your tasks or if you feel underutilized. It’s essential to take charge of your own internship experience.
Section 1.2: Time and Email Management Strategies
With the entire internship conducted online, managing an influx of emails and meeting requests can become daunting. I often felt overwhelmed as my unread emails piled up, creating anxiety.
To tackle this, consider the following strategies:
- Take a course on organizing your inbox to regain control over your emails.
- Allocate specific blocks of time in your calendar for focused work. Utilize Gmail’s 'Focus Time' feature to signal to others that you need uninterrupted time.
- Consult your supervisor to determine which meetings are essential, especially if you find yourself inundated with invites.
Chapter 2: Staying Aligned with Your Goals
Interning at Google was a remarkable experience, but I realized that I sometimes took on more than I could handle. While it’s great to engage in various activities, it’s important to stay focused on your primary objectives to avoid unnecessary stress.
Here are some tips:
- If you’re eager to participate in extracurricular activities, choose just one that truly excites you to ensure you can enjoy it without compromising your main responsibilities.
- Keep your supervisor informed about any additional commitments outside your primary project work; transparency is key.
- Don’t hesitate to communicate if you feel overwhelmed and need to step back from certain tasks. Most people are more understanding than you might think!
Now that you have these insights, you’re well-equipped to excel in your virtual internship and hopefully secure a return offer!
Good luck!
