Javier Artigas faced a daunting diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease and lost his job while caring for four children. He endured a challenging three-and-a-half-year journey of hemodialysis alongside eight other patients, all of whom unfortunately succumbed to their illnesses—except for him. As his financial situation worsened, he lost his home and struggled to afford food.

In a stroke of ingenuity, Javier turned to Airbnb to rent out his house. The Argentine writer Hernán Casciari rented the space for a getaway with his girlfriend. During their stay, Hernán suffered a heart attack, and Javier and his wife, Alejandra, heroically rushed him to the hospital, saving his life.

Hernán recovered and penned a humorous review on Airbnb, jokingly remarking: "Excellent accommodation for those prone to heart attacks. The hosts, Javier and Alejandra, are like guardian angels, saving your life without prior acquaintance. Highly recommended!"

This review caught the attention of an Airbnb executive in Miami, who forwarded it to Joe Gebbia, one of the company's co-founders. Joe reached out to Javier, and they spent ten days together, during which Joe learned about Javier's plight and offered him the capital to launch a business he had envisioned.

Eventually, Javier underwent a kidney transplant, and his health improved significantly. He continued collaborating with Joe Gebbia, transforming his misfortune into a blessing that has benefited over 156,000 people globally. He founded ConectusMedical, a platform designed to enhance the travel experiences of the 7 million hemodialysis patients worldwide. His company now operates in 150 countries, with 8,000 centers and seven international offices, all originating from his kitchen table in Uruguay.
