Writing Imperfect Articles Accelerates Your Medium Growth

Chapter 1: Embracing Imperfection
Are you anxious about clicking the publish button? Do you hesitate before sharing your work, fearing that it won't measure up? This feeling is quite common among writers, and it's perfectly normal. However, it's crucial to understand that your articles need not be flawless.
Publishing articles that aren't perfect can actually enhance your growth on Medium. It reduces the pressure and self-doubt that often accompany the writing process.
Why Striving for Perfection Can Hinder Your Success
The time invested in crafting a high-quality article can often outweigh the benefits. For instance, if it takes you 20 minutes to write a piece rated 8/10 in quality, you might spend an hour for a piece rated 9/10. In this case, you gain only a slight improvement in quality while significantly increasing the time spent.
To illustrate:
- An 8/10 article: 8 quality points / 20 minutes = 0.4
- A 9/10 article: 9 quality points / 60 minutes = 0.15
This example shows that the effort to achieve a marginal increase in quality may not be worth it. While you can't always calculate these numbers with precision, aiming for articles that are "good enough" can save you time.
How Long Should You Spend on Writing?
Typically, I can produce a 1,000-word article in about 30 minutes. My fast typing speed—about 150 words per minute—helps, but I also take time to think through my ideas, which may balance out the typing advantage. This 30-minute timeframe is realistic only when I'm fully focused. Distractions can extend this time significantly.
Despite the time it takes, I enjoy writing, as it allows me to reflect on my thoughts.
Determining Your Writing Time
While I won't provide a specific number, you should strive for a timeframe that fits your schedule. If writing is a passion for you, the time spent may be less important than the enjoyment of the process. For those with busier schedules, a target of around 45 minutes for a short article can be a good goal.
Consistency is key on Medium; even shorter articles can contribute to your growth. Aim for a minimum of 300 words to engage readers effectively. Shorter articles risk being skimmed quickly, which may hinder your visibility and earnings.
Remember, longer articles can generate more income on average, so if you have the time, consider writing multiple shorter pieces instead of one lengthy article.
Why I Prefer Longer Articles
My enjoyment of writing often leads me to produce articles around 1,000 words long. This allows me the freedom to express my thoughts without self-imposed limits on word count.
Creating Articles That Meet Standards
Don't get bogged down by the pursuit of perfection. The time saved from not striving for an immaculate article can be redirected toward writing more pieces. You'll find that a good balance of quality and quantity can lead to better growth on Medium.
In Conclusion
In summary, focus less on perfection and more on producing articles that are satisfactory. Enjoy the process of writing and stay consistent, as passion is the driving force behind your success.
