Words wield more influence than we often recognize. When we belittle ourselves or express sentiments like "I'm not capable," our minds internalize these messages as truth. It’s crucial to monitor our self-talk.

Early in my career, when I faced unrecognized efforts or received less-than-stellar feedback, I would harshly criticize myself, questioning my place in the workplace. It took therapy for me to learn the importance of self-compassion. Now, I frame feedback positively: "Great! I’ll adjust this and that, and next time, it will improve."

Being impeccable means honoring your truth. It involves refraining from self-judgment and avoiding statements that contradict your core beliefs and values. The workplace can be demanding, so it’s vital to maintain your identity amidst external pressures.

Section 1.2: Don’t Take Anything Personally

"Easier said than done," I know. Feedback can often stem from a manager’s bad day or be a critique of a project. Remember, it’s not a reflection of your worth as a person; it's about the work you deliver.

For an extended period, I struggled to separate my identity from my job title. I realized that external validation should not dictate my self-esteem or mood. This understanding took time, but it also applies to our personal lives.

If you find yourself taking things personally, consider the next agreement: Don’t make assumptions.

As a woman, often the sole representative in a room filled with men, I sometimes hesitated to speak up. I would think, "These men have been doing this for ages; who am I to suggest something new?"

Over time, I learned that if I didn't voice my thoughts:

  • Nobody would advocate for me.
  • My unclear tasks would linger.
  • Expectations would misalign.
  • Projects would falter.

I've lost count of how many times colleagues remarked, "You ask a lot of questions, don't you, Mariana?" My response? "That's part of my job!" Always remember to ask and clarify—never assume.

Striving to do your best doesn’t equate to sacrificing personal time for work. It means dedicating your focus and effort to the present moment. Relish the journey rather than fixating on the end goal.

I remind myself, "Criticism may come, but I’m offering my best based on my current knowledge and resources. I hope the future version of myself looks back with pride."
