Best Productivity Tools That Have Made a Difference for Me

Chapter 1: Introduction to Productivity Tools

Since the publication of Indistractable, I frequently receive inquiries about the tools and applications I utilize to maximize my daily productivity. Through extensive research into the psychology of focus, productivity, and distractions, I've come to realize that there isn't a singular, perfect productivity tool. Instead, the most effective tools are those that you will consistently use. Therefore, I rely on a select few that enhance my performance.

It's essential to identify a small number of tools that work for you and customize them to meet your specific requirements rather than waste time searching for an ideal solution. Below, I share the productivity tools I use most often, which may also be beneficial for you.

Section 1.1: Google Calendar for Efficient Scheduling

For anyone familiar with Indistractable, you'll know that timeboxing is one of the most powerful productivity strategies available. This technique offers a more effective approach to time management compared to traditional to-do lists and is vital for becoming indistractable.

My timeboxing strategy is managed through Google Calendar, where I maintain my schedule. Every Sunday, I dedicate 15 minutes to review and adjust my plans for the upcoming week.

For those who prefer not to use digital calendars, I've created a free template for scheduling that allows you to organize your tasks in 15-minute intervals. You can also explore other timeboxing applications to find what suits you best.

Section 1.2: Pocket for Managing Information Overload

In the past, I would often find myself lost in a sea of online articles, spending hours reading one after another. This habit became so overwhelming that I established a strict rule: I would no longer read articles in a web browser.

Now, I use two apps to help with this issue: Pocket and Voice Dream. When I come across an interesting article, I flag it in Pocket, which then saves the text for later. I only allow myself to listen to these articles through Voice Dream while exercising.

This method, known as "temptation bundling" as coined by Katherine Milkman from the Wharton School, effectively combines a desirable behavior with a necessary one. Research indicates that this technique enhances productivity and has worked well for me over the years.

Section 1.3: Fitbod for Consistent Exercise

Fitbod is the fitness app that has truly engaged me. The developers utilized my Hooked Model to create this application.

Having struggled with obesity in the past, fitness is a top priority for me. Despite numerous attempts, I struggled to maintain a consistent exercise routine. Fitbod has made it possible for me to work out regularly for over two years, largely because it provides me with a customized workout plan each time I log in, eliminating the uncertainty of what to do.

The app has gained immense popularity, with over 5 million downloads, and consistently ranks among the top apps in its category.

Section 1.4: Kindle for Better Sleep

Choosing the right productivity tools also involves eliminating those that aren't beneficial. For this reason, the Kindle is the only electronic device I allow in my bedroom.

My wife and I decided to keep TVs and smartphones out of our sleeping space long ago. Previously, when I had trouble sleeping, I would often reach for my smartphone, leading to distractions and more stress. Now, I use my Kindle as a sleep aid. When I wake up with a racing mind, I turn to it for reading.

A helpful tip: find a book that captures your interest but is not overly stimulating, as it can help lull you to sleep. Reading has proven to be the best remedy for insomnia that I've encountered.

Section 1.5: Forest for Enhanced Focus

Forest stands out as my favorite app for minimizing distractions. It aligns perfectly with Step 4 of my Indistractable Model, which involves making pacts to avoid distractions.

Whenever I want to commit to uninterrupted work time, I open the Forest app and set a timer for how long I intend to stay focused. Once I hit the "Plant" button, a virtual seedling appears on the screen, and the countdown begins. If I try to switch tasks before the timer ends, the virtual tree dies, which motivates me to stay on task.

I sometimes collaborate with others using Forest, such as when my daughter is studying. We work side by side, reinforcing our commitment to stay focused.

Chapter 2: Focusmate for Accountability

In the realm of effort pacts, Focusmate has been a game-changer for me. As an investor in the platform, I can attest to its effectiveness in creating accountability through one-on-one video sessions.

During my first experience, I was paired with a medical student from the Czech Republic named Martin. Knowing he would be waiting for our scheduled session motivated me to stay on track while he studied anatomy. Focusmates leave reviews for each other, which discourages skipping meetings and fosters commitment.

These are my top productivity tools that I incorporate into my daily routine to remain indistractable. Keep in mind, this list is just a sample of what I have tried. Here’s a comprehensive list of all the tools I endorse. Explore and discover what works best for you!
