Creating Terrifying Imagery with Midjourney’s Invisible Space
Written on
Chapter 1: The Concept of Invisible Space
When it comes to crafting eerie visuals, it's often wise to leave the unseen untouched. This technique can be harnessed to generate unsettling scenes for horror and science fiction narratives.
In a previous article on Layout and Composition, I introduced a method that utilizes invisible space to reposition subjects off-center while maintaining the standard 1:1 aspect ratio.
Consider these examples: the resulting images are visually appealing, generally bright, and ensure your subject remains prominent.
You might explore keywords like "left side blank," "right side blank," or "negative space." This approach proves effective with wider images, though it may not apply to the default square ratio.
It's important to be patient, as achieving the desired subject placement may require several iterations.
Prompt example:
/imagine prompt: a photo featuring an imperceptible invisible center area beside a person.
The suggested templates for this method include prompts like "a photo of a (large) invisible zone in the room with the (subject) positioned to the side" or "a photo showcasing an imperceptible invisible center area with a (subject) nearby." Simply replace (subject) with your desired character—be it a boy, man, woman, etc. The term (large) is optional.
Using this technique, you can also place a character off-center and integrate them seamlessly into a different image. A simpler background typically yields better results than a cluttered one.
Stay tuned for my upcoming article where I’ll reveal an improved blending technique beyond the /blend command!
Prompt example:
/imagine prompt: a photo of an imperceptible invisible center area with a police officer next to it, set against a neutral light-gray background.
Here are additional prompts to illustrate before we delve into the creepier visuals:
- /imagine prompt: a photo capturing a large invisible area in the room next to a boy.
- Occasionally, the AI may insert an object into the center.
- /imagine prompt: a photo of an imperceptible invisible center area with a woman beside it.
The image below demonstrates the left/right side blank and negative space strategy for positioning the subject off-center.
Prompt example:
/imagine prompt: a photo of a man in the room, right side blank, utilizing negative space.
Chapter 2: Unleashing Horror from the Invisible Realm
Things took a supernatural turn as I experimented with new applications of the "invisible space" technique.
Initially, I aimed to position a character in the corner of a bedroom, but the results were unexpectedly eerie.
Prompt example:
/imagine prompt: bedroom, a photo of an invisible imperceptible center area with a guy next to it.
By simply adding "bedroom" or "kitchen" to the start or end of my prompts, which seemed innocuous, the AI produced chilling images reminiscent of horror from another realm.
Prompt examples:
- /imagine prompt: bedroom, a photo of an invisible imperceptible center area with a woman beside it.
- /imagine prompt: a photo of an imperceptible invisible center area featuring a girl, kitchen.
The haunting and surreal imagery generated could easily serve as inspiration for horror tales.

Other Bedroom Scenes
Not every result was terrifying; some prompts yielded fascinating bedroom scenes suitable for science fiction or fantasy narratives.
By removing "invisible" and retaining "imperceptible" in the prompts, one can create captivating bedroom scenes that occasionally blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, like flooding.
You can also introduce new themes or concepts, such as "alien invasion," at the end of your prompts to discover what the AI generates.
Prompt example:
/imagine prompt: bedroom, a photo of an imperceptible center area with a guy next to it.
Consider this scenario:
A man awakens from a dream, only to find his world under siege.
Prompt example:
/imagine prompt: bedroom, a photo of an imperceptible center area with a guy next to it.
Other potential scenarios include:
- A flooded room.
- A man waking up to find his space connected to an unfamiliar tropical forest.
- An alien invasion.
Prompt example:
/imagine prompt: bedroom, a photo of an imperceptible center area with a guy next to it, alien invasion.

Conclusion
The "invisible technique" can effectively reposition your subject. However, the archetypal associations with these prompts may also evoke disturbing and unsettling scenes in settings like bedrooms and kitchens.
This method holds great potential for crafting narratives in both horror and science fiction genres.
