Embrace the Freedom of Writing: Ignore the Rules and Advice

Written on

Chapter 1: The Essence of Writing

The most compelling advice for writers might just be to disregard all the advice out there. The paradox, however, is that in order to apply this wisdom, you must first acknowledge it!

In 2014, I made a bold decision to leave a stable IT career and enroll in film school with aspirations of becoming a movie director. To my surprise, I soon realized that I needed a script to direct the film I envisioned. It dawned on me that experienced writers would be hesitant to collaborate with a novice director. The writers who were interested in working with me were also beginners and couldn't bring my vision to life. Consequently, I took control of the situation, marking the beginning of my writing journey.

I opened a new document and typed "Fade In," which felt exhilarating. However, as I started the first scene, I found myself distracted by the idea of enjoying a coffee at a café. This led to a series of distractions, and I never completed that scene. Nevertheless, during this process, I wrote several scripts and other pieces—some I take pride in, while others I do not. Here’s some valuable advice I wish I had received when I embarked on this journey:

Section 1.1: There Are No Set Rules

Writing is a field without rigid rules. Unlike ballet, violin, or filmmaking, which require extensive training and adherence to guidelines, writing simply demands a computer or a typewriter. With these tools, you can craft anything from a short story to a sprawling novel.

"Writing rules can act like limitations. If they don’t aid your progress, they hold you back."

You can embark on your writing journey at any time and from anywhere. Every year, new authors emerge from their bedrooms, scribbling late into the night to achieve bestseller status. Writing is a profession that welcomes newcomers without needing specialized equipment or formal mentorship.

Section 1.2: Finding Your Voice

To begin, look within. What message do you wish to convey? What insights or experiences do you hold that could resonate with others? Focus on that burning passion inside you, and prioritize it. Although many ideas may come to mind, choose one and explore it fully.

"The best advice I’d offer my younger self is to expel all those rough drafts quickly."

This is how you commence your journey!

Chapter 2: The Commitment to Writing

This video, titled "Terrible Writing Advice You Should Ignore," explores common misconceptions about writing. It highlights the importance of trusting your instincts and following your unique path, rather than succumbing to prevalent but misguided advice.

Section 2.1: The Importance of Reading

Do you know someone who aspires to be a writer but avoids reading? That person will likely struggle to succeed. To develop as a writer, extensive reading is essential. You need to absorb various styles, and in time, you'll identify and refine your own voice.

The magic moment occurs when, after reading a lackluster piece, you think, "I could do better than this!"

"Your response to mediocre writing can indicate your potential as a writer."

This realization underscores the necessity of hard work.

Section 2.2: Trust Yourself

Every piece of writing—be it an article or a novel—needs to pulsate with life. It should possess a heartbeat of its own. To achieve this, you must be the sole architect of your work.

If you start heeding the advice of others instead of trusting your instincts, you may find yourself lost.

"Listening to everyone except yourself can render your work lifeless."

Section 3: Embrace the Challenges

Why should you confront the areas that cause you pain? Because what troubles you is significant; it matters. Channel these emotions into your writing. Revisiting painful memories can yield profound insights, while also revealing the joy that can coexist with discomfort.

Write about the things that excite you and fuel your creativity. If a piece bores you, ask yourself how to make it engaging.

"The simplest way to become an author is to write the story you wish existed."

By pursuing what resonates with you, you’ll find motivation to write every day.

Section 4: Engage Your Audience

Start from the premise that no one cares about your story. Shift your mindset to think about how to capture their attention from the very first line.

"Assuming your reader shares your enthusiasm is a mistake."

The best way to make others care is to genuinely invest in your work. When you connect with your characters, your readers will feel that connection too.

Last Thoughts

Ultimately, I’m learning to maintain a healthy detachment from my writing. I strive not to refer to it as "my work," but rather recognize that it flows through me.

By keeping the muse engaged and showing up daily, I can witness the magic unfold.

Until next time,

Ciao!
