Embracing Vulnerability Through Writing: A Journey of Healing

Written on

Chapter 1: The Therapeutic Power of Writing

From a young age, I found solace in writing. My childhood stories, like The Fairy That Couldn’t Fly and Two Teddy Bears in Love, were a creative outlet. However, as I've matured, I've come to realize that much of my writing serves a therapeutic purpose.

Writing becomes therapeutic when it allows us to:

  • Attempt to understand the complexities of life and its challenges (You’re Not Crazy, it’s Real Pain).
  • Process emotions and frustrations, especially regarding societal issues (Condolences on Your Loss).
  • Explore our place in the world and our perceptions (Lessons from Failure).
  • Engage in research for personal healing (Recovering After Trauma).
  • Reflect on personal growth and journeys (A Lesson in Patience).
  • Contribute meaningfully, helping others feel less isolated in their struggles (What You Can Do to Help Someone with Chronic Pain?).

Publishing online invites vulnerability

Sharing my thoughts publicly, rather than keeping them confined to a private journal, exposes me to critiques. While this can be daunting, platforms like Medium often provide a supportive community that understands the courage it takes to be open.

However, the act of publishing can feel like staring into an abyss of vulnerability, especially when it's time to hit that publish button.

One significant hurdle arises when sharing across different platforms.

Cultural influences shape our willingness to share

My early career was marked by an environment that discouraged personal disclosures, emphasizing the need to check emotions at the door. Though times have changed with the introduction of employee support programs, the ingrained mindset remains.

On LinkedIn, showing vulnerability could suggest deeper issues, potentially marking me as someone in need of therapy rather than a capable candidate.

The mask of productivity

It's worth noting that vulnerability isn't a prerequisite for engaging writing. Many authors produce content that showcases a polished, successful persona, often masking their true experiences. While such articles can be insightful, they do not resonate with those of us who have faced significant challenges.

I choose to embrace my vulnerability in writing, sharing my authentic self rather than wearing a facade.

The way forward

Ultimately, every individual grapples with challenges, whether minor or substantial. Confronting these obstacles fosters growth and adaptability, and can be a vital asset for both personal and professional development. Knowing others have faced similar trials and emerged stronger is invaluable.

In the spirit of authenticity, I commit to sharing my journey on LinkedIn and encourage others to do the same. Together, we can foster a culture of openness that leads to positive changes in our workplaces.

Thank you for engaging with my work. If you find value in it, please share it. Your support could help someone in need regain their footing.
