Empowering Advice for Beginners on Their Fitness Journey

Chapter 1: Starting Your Fitness Journey
Here are some valuable tips to help you embark on your fitness journey and achieve your goals.
Not too long ago, I found myself in a creative slump, so I turned to my Instagram followers for insight. I asked them for advice on starting a fitness journey, and their responses inspired me to compile this list of eight essential pieces of guidance.
1. "Take the First Step"
This gem of advice came from a client who simply said, "Just start." While it may sound simplistic, it holds profound truth. Don't wait for the perfect moment—those moments rarely arrive. As fitness expert Jordan Syatt wisely noted, "Stop wasting time waiting for the 'perfect' moment to commit to your goals." Whether it’s a short walk, a 20-minute gym session, or even just drinking more water, the important thing is to begin. Take small, actionable steps like going to the gym weekly or eating protein-rich meals. The key is to start making positive choices that will lead to results and motivation.
2. "Define Your Goals"
It's crucial to articulate what you specifically want to achieve. A clear goal will help create a tailored action plan. For example, if your objective is to tackle stress eating, that clarity allows for more effective strategies to address it.
3. "Incorporate Small Habits"
Overhauling your lifestyle overnight is rarely sustainable. Instead, focus on small, manageable changes. As James Clear suggests, “Chase two rabbits, get none.” By committing to one new habit at a time, like five minutes of exercise, you’ll gradually build an identity as someone who prioritizes fitness.
4. "Choose Enjoyable Foods"
Sticking to a strict diet can lead to burnout and binge eating. As Ben Carpenter points out, avoiding certain foods can make you miserable. Instead, aim for a balanced approach—sustaining a diet you enjoy is key to long-term success.
5. "Establish a Routine"
Although there’s no universally best time to work out, consistency is vital. Find a time that fits your schedule—whether it's morning, lunch, or evening—and try to stick to it regularly.
6. "Embrace Flexibility"
Understand that not every day will be perfect. Life can throw curveballs, and that’s okay. Focus on being consistent rather than perfect. As long as you maintain a moderate level of activity and healthy eating, you’ll continue to progress.
7. "Focus on Strength, Not Calories"
Rather than viewing exercise solely as a calorie-burning activity, focus on becoming stronger. As Jay Alderton and Jordan Syatt emphasize, the purpose of working out is to enhance your strength and endurance, not just to shed pounds.
8. "Prioritize Consistency"
Consistency is the cornerstone of success in any fitness journey. The road to achieving your goals may take years, but by showing up and putting in the work consistently, you will see results. Aim for a realistic approach—hitting 80% of your nutrition and training targets will yield significant progress.
