# Extraordinary Minecraft Redstone Innovation: CHUNGUS 2

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to CHUNGUS 2

In the realm of Minecraft, a player and YouTuber known as Sammyuri has accomplished something truly remarkable. Before delving into Sammyuri's latest achievements, it's essential to highlight his groundbreaking Minecraft Redstone project from 2021.

At the close of 2021, Sammyuri shared a video on his YouTube channel featuring the CHUNGUS 2, touted as "A very powerful 1Hz Minecraft CPU." While a clock speed of 1Hz may seem trivial, it’s astonishing considering it was constructed within Minecraft using limited Redstone resources. Personally, I struggle to understand how Redstone functions, yet Sammyuri has managed to create virtual computer modules using it.

Creating the CHUNGUS 2 took Sammyuri seven months, with the aim of maximizing Redstone's capabilities. The name CHUNGUS 2 stands for:

Computational Humongous Unconventional Number and Graphics Unit by Sammyuri 2. Below are the specifications for CHUNGUS 2:

  • 10 tick (1Hz) clock.
  • 4-stage instruction pipeline: fetch, decode, execute, writeback.
  • 3-operand RISC architecture.
  • 16-bit instructions with a 5-bit opcode.
  • 67 unique instructions.
  • An instruction set tailored for ease of programming.

Here’s a breakdown of the various modules within the CHUNGUS 2 CPU:

  • Registers
  • ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit)
  • Flags and Branch logic
  • Large math units
  • I/O ports
  • RAM
  • Data cache
  • Cache controller
  • Stack pointer
  • Instruction cache
  • Program counter
  • Call stack
  • Control unit
  • Extensive control lines throughout the CPU

The CHUNGUS 2 can accommodate up to 4KiB of attachable program memory, equivalent to that of an Atari 2600. This capacity allows it to run relatively large programs by Minecraft CPU standards. However, programs must be developed externally, with an assembler directing the schematic directly into the program memory, enabling quick execution.

Many Minecraft CPUs face limitations in memory, resulting in a brief list of runnable programs. Fortunately, this is not an issue for the CHUNGUS 2. Here’s a selection of programs the CHUNGUS 2 can execute:

  • Tetris
  • Snake
  • Breakout
  • Connect 4
  • Graph rendering
  • Conway’s Game of Life
  • Mandelbrot Set (20 iterations)

All of these programs operate on the same hardware, differing only by the program itself.

Recently, Sammyuri has managed to surpass the original CHUNGUS 2. In the comments section of the CHUNGUS 2 video, several viewers humorously requested a demonstration of the CHUNGUS 2 running Minecraft. Just two days ago, Sammyuri released a new video titled “I made Minecraft in Minecraft with Redstone!”

Sammyuri clearly embraced this challenge but soon recognized that the CHUNGUS 2 required upgrades. He collaborated with fellow Minecraft aficionados and programmers, Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow. The enhancements to the CHUNGUS 2 comprised:

  • 8KB program memory
  • 256B additional RAM
  • Hardware acceleration units
  • 6KB graphics memory
  • AMOGUS graphics processor
  • 96x64 pixel display
  • PS4-style controller

While the final product may not be flawless, it stands as an extraordinary accomplishment. In the video, you can observe that many fundamental aspects of the core Minecraft survival experience are playable on the CHUNGUS 2. I anticipated a rudimentary 2D experience, but to my surprise, the gameplay is in 3D.

It’s hard to fathom that someone could create a video game within a video game, let alone within Minecraft itself. This clearly illustrates the potential of Minecraft's Redstone capabilities. Kudos to Sammyuri, Uwerta, and StackDoubleFlow for achieving what many of us believed impossible. Your dedication is commendable.

Were you equally astonished to see a functional 3D recreation of Minecraft within Minecraft? Share your thoughts in the comments section!
