“In modern times, the educated classes in Europe and North America have drifted away from religion, neglecting the inherent human quest for answers. Philosophers have found themselves marginalized, and the field has lost its prestige, relegated to an academic exercise.”
This raises two critical inquiries: Is philosophy still essential in our current context? If so, how can it reclaim its meaning?
The Challenge of Defining Contemporary Philosophy
Understanding modern philosophy presents a unique challenge, especially when considering the reception of thinkers like Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche. For instance, without the influence of Edmund Husserl, figures like Bernard Bolzano might have faded into obscurity.

Is philosophy still equipped to address the practical challenges of daily life? Or has it, particularly in the Western world, remained confined within a narrow demographic?
Ultimately, philosophy should strive to tackle fundamental issues. It must create frameworks that individuals can relate to. Currently, it appears that political agendas and propaganda overshadow philosophical thought, paralleling the existentialist movement’s quest for identity post-World War II. In today’s landscape, there is a compelling need to redefine identity constructs.
The Intersection of Identity and Information
In an age where the internet provides unprecedented access to information, individuals can sift through vast amounts of content from the comfort of their homes. This digital landscape allows us to piece together identities that help us navigate a rapidly changing world.
The challenge for philosophy lies in addressing how existing concepts of identity can support individuals and where these ideas may be outdated. However, this is only part of the issue. The methodology of philosophy must evolve; waiting for insights from historical thinkers is no longer tenable. We must adapt philosophy to be more responsive, agile, diverse, and bold.
The Burden of Constant Self-Definition
The collective confusion of our time may stem from the overwhelming influx of information that we struggle to categorize. If we possess the tools to access and utilize this information, why shouldn’t our goal be survival in this environment?

Without a radical practical relevance, urgency, and a political edge, contemporary philosophy will be viewed as a relic of a slower, more formal era of inquiry.
