Unlocking the Secrets to Making Money with Subscription Models

Written on

Chapter 1: The Value of Information

I've recently come across some interesting insights regarding the pricing of the Sun on Sunday newspaper, which is set at £1.40.

Now, I'm trying to determine whether it’s more economical to buy the Sun on Sunday or opt for a six-pack of toilet paper since both serve essential purposes. The Sun is priced at £0.80 for each weekday edition, while the Daily Mail costs £0.90 during the week, with its Sunday edition priced at £2.

Considering that there are typically 24 weekdays (including Saturdays) and 4 Sundays in a month, we can calculate the monthly expenses as follows:

The Sun: £24.80

The Mail: £29.60

This amounts to a significant sum spent on what can often be a mixture of biased narratives and paid promotions.

Let's be frank: newspapers primarily function as media companies that charge consumers to display pre-paid advertisements through storytelling. The term NEWS itself implies "New Stories," highlighting the essence of their role in sharing contemporary narratives.

Humans thrive on stories; they are crucial for our development and understanding of the world. This inherent need for storytelling explains the popularity of fiction, films, and television shows.

While newspapers may not be able to blatantly deceive their readers, they aren't bound by any ethical obligations to present information in a socially responsible manner. Thus, anyone who places blind faith in newspaper content is likely unaware that these outlets are fundamentally businesses focused on profit through advertising sales.

Yet, I digress. The core message here is that some individuals willingly spend up to £30 monthly on questionable content and promotional material—like Wren's Kitchen's Big Summer Sale, if it exists.

The willingness to pay for articles and narratives indicates a lucrative opportunity for you to generate income through information, articles, and storytelling about specific topics. Moreover, many consumers are now ready to pay extra for content that is devoid of intrusive advertisements.

A prime example of this trend is ITV X, a catch-up platform that allows viewers to watch shows on demand for free. Initially funded through advertisements aired during programming, ITV X now gives users the option to pay a monthly subscription for an ad-free viewing experience.

This willingness to pay for the absence of ads clearly illustrates that consumers are open to spending on quality content, especially if it comes without distractions from advertisements.

Thus, there is a remarkable chance for individuals to profit from creating and sharing content by implementing a subscription model.

When you reflect on it, this opportunity is truly astounding. In the past, people could only access local or national newspapers. Now, anyone can subscribe to your content from anywhere in the world.

Best of all, you don't need to produce an overwhelming amount of content. Revenue can be generated by attracting a large audience of subscribers who are happy to pay a modest fee for limited content each month.

If you were to strip away all the paid advertisements from a publication like The Sun, what remains would likely be just a handful of articles across a few pages. The actual content volume required is relatively low.

Sure, you must provide more value than what subscribers are paying for to ensure their satisfaction. But remember, you don’t have to deliver hours of content if the subscription is only £5 or £10 per month.

This might not seem significant at first, but when you have 1,000 subscribers each paying between £5 and £10 monthly for a few articles, the total income can reach £5,000 to £10,000 per month—an impressive sum, wouldn't you agree?
