In the United States, we often find ourselves in a culture dominated by hustle rather than opportunity. As a business student, many assured me that I could monetize my passion, allowing me to earn a living while doing what I love and having complete control over my life. This sounds fantastic! Yet, here I am, still grinding away at a day job years post-college. My experience has been largely shaped by this routine.
Before diving into the idea of transforming my passion projects into a business, I learned some valuable lessons.

Understanding What You Want
Ali Abdaal, a former doctor turned YouTuber, shared a compelling insight that resonates with many aspiring entrepreneurs. To paraphrase, he noted that some YouTubers are beginning to realize they’ve swapped a traditional 9-to-5 for an all-consuming 24/7 endeavor. No matter the context, a 24/7 commitment is rarely sustainable in the long run. It might provide short-term excitement, but will it remain enjoyable a year, two, or even ten years down the line?
While there are exceptions, generally speaking, sustaining peak performance continuously isn’t feasible. The risk of transforming your passion into a source of stress through burnout is real and disheartening. Hence, it’s vital to be clear about your aspirations. Are you genuinely seeking a career that aligns with your passion, or are you merely trading one set of frustrations for another?
Reflecting on Your Motivation
If you find yourself eager to leave your 9-to-5 to pursue your passion full-time, I invite you to reflect on this question:
“What potential challenges do you anticipate if you were to limit your work on your passion project to less than eight hours a day?”
This reflection is essential because everyone needs space to breathe. Regardless of your feelings toward your work, allowing yourself time to recharge is crucial.
If you’re genuinely invested in your passion, you may find that:
- You work more effectively, knowing your time is limited.
- You focus on the aspects of your project that truly excite you, cutting out the extraneous tasks.
- You give yourself the necessary downtime to rejuvenate, rather than risking burnout.
Additionally, allowing time for other life activities can enhance your appreciation for your passion project, making your efforts feel more meaningful over time.
In conclusion, there’s nothing inherently wrong with pursuing your passion project as a business or even as your primary income source. However, it’s vital to evaluate whether this is genuinely what you want and to consider the implications that come with this decision.
