What truly holds significance for you? What values and qualities do you wish to integrate into your actions? What kind of individual do you aspire to become?

In times of crisis, a peculiar shift occurs. Fear, anxiety, and self-doubt often cloud our judgment. We frequently lose sight of what truly matters and may act in ways that neglect our deeper goals and intentions. It’s easy to become entangled in an endless pursuit of immediate desires, abandoning our long-term aspirations. Alternatively, we might find ourselves trapped in a monotonous cycle of meaningless chores, feeling busy yet not truly alive. We might even become paralyzed by daily burdens, spending hours staring aimlessly at screens or blank walls.

Regardless of how we respond to a crisis, the fundamental aim usually remains unchanged: to escape pain. We seek to eliminate suffering, sadness, and everything that makes life challenging. This holds true whether we attempt to suppress our emotions, distract ourselves with work, or succumb to apathy.

While it may not seem apparent, this reaction is entirely natural. We all occasionally flee from our pain as a coping mechanism. However, in doing so, we inadvertently avoid what brings meaning to our lives. Instead of pursuing our goals, desires, and ideals, we focus on avoiding discomfort. If we maintain this approach for too long, we may begin to question whether life holds any meaning at all.

Unwanted emotions quickly resurface. We might forget our sorrows for a brief moment, yet they inevitably return, bringing with them all the thoughts and feelings we tried to escape. In the meantime, our aspirations and good intentions are left behind, creating a void where meaning should exist.

One of life’s greatest paradoxes is that purpose and pain often coexist. We cannot achieve one without experiencing the other. Pursuing what is meaningful requires effort, struggle, and the risk of setbacks and loss. The more invested we are, the more intensely we feel those losses. Once life reveals this paradox to us, we realize that the more we care, the more vulnerable we become. The only way to invite purpose into our lives is to allow pain to surface as well.

It's easy to overlook this lesson, especially during times of suffering. In such a mindset, we tend to shut ourselves off, stuck in a cycle of avoidance, or clinging too tightly to a form of "happiness" that can be equally harmful. If we wish to escape this unproductive loop, we must reconnect with our goals, as well as the pain and vulnerability that accompany them, and start allowing a more natural ebb and flow of our emotions.

Choosing What Matters

Imagine setting sail on a journey. To navigate successfully, you need two essential tools: a map and a compass. The map reveals both nearby and distant destinations worth visiting, while the compass shows you the general direction you should take.

Life mirrors this journey closely. To avoid losing your way, it’s crucial to know the places worth visiting and the directions you can take. The places represent the goals you can achieve along your path, while the directions embody your values that guide you toward what truly matters.

Unlike goals, your values are perpetual. For instance, you might reach the goal of finding a partner, but you can never "achieve" or possess the value of love as a permanent state.

This applies to any value. No matter what goals you accomplish in life, certain values will continue to resonate with you. You may already be aware of your values, but it might be worth reflecting on them for a moment.

What is most important to you? Which values and qualities do you wish to reflect in your actions? What kind of person do you aspire to be?

Choosing your values is a personal journey between you and the reflection in the mirror. If you strive to adopt a value out of obligation, shame, or compliance, it won't uplift you; rather, it will weigh you down. Thus, when you examine a list of values, approach it not as a set of external expectations but as an opportunity for personal expression.

Gently consider the list and freely select the qualities that resonate with you the most at this moment. The following list may inspire you:

Merely choosing what matters isn't enough. If you want your values to impact your life, you must also act upon them. This may be the toughest step, yet it is also the most crucial.

How can you incorporate your values into your life? It can be beneficial to revisit this question repeatedly, as you may find different answers each time.

For instance, if you value courage, you might decide to speak up in an upcoming meeting. If gratitude is important to you, consider expressing your appreciation to someone close to you. Through small steps, you can let your values influence how you interact with others and yourself.

You can also utilize your values as a guide for larger decisions. For example, if you value growth, you might choose to take on a challenging work project or even consider a complete career change. The possibilities are limitless, confined only by your imagination.

Your values may evolve throughout your life, but as long as you are alive, certain values (traits and actions) will matter to you. They can lead you toward what is significant. Whenever you feel stuck or face a personal crisis, refocus on your values, take necessary actions, and embrace the accompanying pain.
