Unlocking the Secrets of Earning $200 in Amazon KDP Royalties
Written on
Chapter 1: My Journey with Amazon KDP
Self-publishing on Amazon KDP has taught me a lot. When I released my first book just over six months ago, I was completely in the dark about the process.
I lacked knowledge on how to: - Run advertisements (still a work in progress) - Collaborate on newsletter exchanges with fellow authors - Conduct free book promotions - Launch my book effectively
The list of my uncertainties was extensive.
Fast forward to March 2022: Amazon sent me a rewarding payment of $200 from my book sales in January, marking my highest earnings from the platform to date. While this amount doesn’t indicate that I’ve mastered KDP, it certainly reflects my progress, especially considering I earned $72 in royalties the previous month.
Here are some insights I gained that might help you if you’re contemplating self-publishing.
Section 1.1: Importance of Getting Reviews
Books on Amazon function like any other product; positive reviews can significantly influence potential buyers. There are several strategies to garner reviews: - I often provide special deals to my newsletter audience. - I utilize Amazon promotions to temporarily offer my books for free in hopes that readers will leave reviews. - I even encourage family members to purchase and review my book.
Regardless of how you achieve them, reviews are crucial. Those four- and five-star ratings can greatly boost sales.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Impact of Genres
As Amethyst Qu often reminds me, fiction tends to outperform nonfiction on Amazon, often in an almost comical way. This presents a challenge for me, as I don’t intend to write fiction. Instead, my focus will be on crafting high-quality books that resonate with readers, while I expand my book catalog.
Section 1.2: The Role of Marketing
I can’t stress enough how vital marketing is; promoting your e-book is just as critical as writing it. Without effective marketing, your book may not reach potential buyers.
Running Amazon ads is one avenue, though my experience has been more trial and error than success so far. Yet, I’m gradually improving at identifying profitable keywords and adjusting my budget.
Additionally, paying for email blasts through services like Bargain Booksy has proven beneficial for me, and I plan to utilize it again.
Before you launch your book, consider setting aside a budget for marketing, accepting that you may not see immediate returns on that investment.
Chapter 2: Diversifying Your Offerings
My first book is available as an e-book, print version, and audiobook, while my second book offers similar formats, with an audiobook in development.
I’m also exploring the idea of bundling my two books into a single product. The rationale is simple: the more products I have, the greater the chance of making sales. I experienced double-digit sales in the first week of my audiobook’s release without any marketing—there’s clearly a demand for the content in audio format.

What’s next for me? Creating a free e-book seems like a promising way to attract new readers, especially since I’m still establishing myself as an author. If readers enjoy my free offering, they may be more likely to purchase my paid titles.
However, I’m currently exhausted from working on my second book, so I haven’t started the free e-book yet.
The key takeaway is that there’s no rush to find success on KDP as a self-published author. It’s a gradual process that may take years, and I’m perfectly fine with that.
