# Unveiling Your Design Journey: The Importance of Storytelling

Chapter 1: The Essence of Your Design Story

Recently, I came across an insightful article by Michael McWatters titled "The Three Questions I Ask Every Designer I Interview." One question he emphasizes is, “What’s your design story?” This prompted me to reflect on the significance of one’s narrative in the design field.

In another article, Benek Lisefski discusses the idea that portfolios have become devoid of personality, urging us to focus on sharing more about ourselves. He asserts, “You can become a good designer by imitating others, but you’ll excel by narrating your own journey.”

I must admit, I’m not the best at articulating my design story, which is why I felt compelled to explore this topic further.

“Write your own story, be your own hero. Speak your own truth, live your own dream.” — Raphaella Vaisseali

What inspired you to pursue a career in design? Was there a pivotal moment when you thought, “I’m ready to dive in”? Perhaps it has been a lifelong dream, or maybe you discovered it through self-study, an online course, or even a boot camp.

Do you recall who first introduced you to the term "UX design"? Where were you when you heard it? What was the atmosphere like? These moments are crucial to your backstory.

“One of the most powerful ways to inspire others is by sharing your unique life experiences.”

What is your background? Where did you grow up? What motivates you? Your design story is a tapestry woven from these threads.

When you’re in an interview setting, it can feel like a formal date where your unique narrative is your strongest asset. Don’t shy away from sharing it.

“Tell me more about yourself—not just your technical skills or coffee consumption. Share what drives you and fuels your passion for design.” — Benek Lisefski

Stop undervaluing your journey. Your life is your narrative. “Write well. Edit often.”

When considering your design story, you may not view it as remarkable, but it truly is. You just need to present it effectively.

Did you have a creative upbringing? If creativity didn’t surface, what held you back? What led you to the creative realm? Each of your prior roles—whether as a chef, architect, or entrepreneur—contributes to a compelling narrative about your design journey.

Your experiences, both highs and lows, form a captivating story that others want to hear.

The Importance of Sharing Your Story

Jeff Goins highlights in his article "3 Reasons Why You Must Become an Expert at Telling Your Own Story" that traditional resumes are becoming obsolete, especially for creatives. Employers are increasingly interested in your life experiences and how they shape your identity.

Goins further asserts that storytelling is the new form of marketing. Consider the narratives behind brands like TOMS, Apple, or Tesla. These stories resonate with people and invite them to be part of a larger mission.

To illustrate this, I recommend watching a video by David Hieatt, founder of Hiut Denim Co., which showcases how storytelling can drive your brand's marketing efforts.

Crafting Your Own Design Narrative

Here’s a draft of my design story:

“Growing up on a farm in Scotland, I never envisioned a creative career. After closing my cleaning business, I relocated to Australia with my family. A conversation with my friend Ash introduced me to the world of UX. After extensive research, I enrolled in a UX design immersive course at General Assembly in Sydney, taught by the talented Susan Wolfe. I embraced my new role as a UX designer at the age of 39.”

You can explore the more detailed version of my journey here.

Platforms for Sharing Your Design Story

  • Portfolio: Include your story to add a personal touch.
  • LinkedIn: Feature your narrative to engage potential employers.
  • Social Media: Share brief versions in your bios.
  • Interviews: Use your story to connect with interviewers.
  • Medium: Write a longer piece to delve deeper into your experiences.

Conclusion

Reflect on your design story and incorporate elements of your backstory that add depth. Your narrative is more intriguing than you realize, and it serves as a powerful alternative to a traditional resume. People are drawn to compelling stories, so don’t hesitate to share yours.
