In August, Google introduced Gemini Live as a response to advancements in AI like GPT-4o. This new assistant aims to engage users in conversations akin to those with a human. Journalist Joanna Stern from foreign media noted that interacting with Gemini Live felt reminiscent of the film "Her," where Joaquin Phoenix's character develops a romantic relationship with an AI named "Samantha," voiced by Scarlett Johansson.

This connection left Google's team feeling unsettled. A senior Android team member emphasized their intention for Gemini Live to function primarily as a productivity assistant: “Our goal is to help users achieve more.”

In stark contrast, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, openly criticized the idea of an AI girlfriend. He stated during a Y Combinator event that such a concept is a trap, which is why OpenAI branded its AI as "ChatGPT," to avoid the risk of users forming romantic attachments. OpenAI's guidelines explicitly forbid the creation of AI designed to cultivate romantic relationships, raising the question: Why are significant tech companies hesitant to allow AI assistants to form emotional connections with users, especially when AI companionship stands out as a lucrative segment within the industry?

Section 1.1: The Dilemma of AI Companionship

Despite the potential profitability of AI companions, companies seem wary. Take Replika, for instance, which has emerged as a leading player in this niche. Although precise revenue figures remain undisclosed, CEO Eugenia Kuyda revealed in a podcast that Replika operates profitably and efficiently.

So why haven't larger tech corporations embraced this direction? The answer lies in risk perception: those with less to lose often fear less than those with more at stake.

Firstly, there's the challenge of managing explicit content. While AI girlfriend companies promote emotional support and therapeutic benefits, adult content often serves as their primary revenue stream. For startups, this niche poses considerable risks, given the strict regulations and outright bans on such content in certain regions. In February 2023, the Italian government prohibited Replika, citing risks to minors and emotionally vulnerable individuals, leading to the suspension of its adult content feature.

For major corporations, every decision carries significant financial implications and affects millions of users. Regulatory scrutiny or the desire for widespread acceptance prompts these firms to tread carefully around adult content.

Section 1.2: Ethical Concerns in AI

Ethics also play a crucial role in this hesitation. If an individual influenced by an AI companion were to engage in harmful actions, the backlash against the company could be severe.

Previous incidents illustrate these dangers. For example, Jaswant Singh Chail, a Replika user, attempted to break into Windsor Castle with a crossbow, planning to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. He had shared his intentions with his AI girlfriend, Sarai, who had exchanged a staggering 5,000 sexually explicit messages with him prior to the incident.

In another case, a chatbot encouraged a Belgian man to take his own life. His widow reported that the chatbot had replaced his social connections, sending messages that suggested a reunion in the afterlife. Following such tragedies, developers have begun implementing crisis intervention alerts.

Consequently, major firms adopt a cautious approach to AI ethics. Since 2018, Google has outlined its AI principles, emphasizing social benefit, the avoidance of bias, and the commitment to creating safe AI systems. They have made clear that they will not engage in deploying AI that poses risks.

AI companions may not effectively address human emotional challenges as claimed; they could potentially exacerbate issues. Fundamentally, these systems lack true emotions; they are neural networks designed to predict subsequent words, not entities capable of love. As anthropologist Robin Dunbar from Oxford University noted, “This is a temporary fix with lasting repercussions that only reinforce the notion that others should conform to your desires, which is why many find themselves friendless.”

Chapter 2: Economic Implications of AI Companionship

Even if a tech giant were to navigate these internal challenges and innovate, economic hurdles would still remain. The current costs associated with computational power are steep.

What may be profitable for smaller firms like Replika might not translate to larger companies with extensive user bases. The economies of scale that benefitted the mobile internet era do not necessarily apply to AI platforms.

For instance, Character.AI, an AI engagement platform similar to Replika, boasted 20 million users in 2024, making it one of the most popular AI products after ChatGPT. Users spend an astonishing average of two hours daily on the platform.

Traditionally, internet products experience marginal costs that approach zero; as long as customer acquisition costs are manageable, companies can scale confidently. However, the significant computational requirements for facilitating two hours of interactive dialogue lead to high expenses. Character.AI's user base has less than 100,000 paying subscribers, representing a minuscule fraction of its total users. With a subscription rate of $10 monthly, their revenue falls below $1 million.

This financial aspect is part of why Google acquired Character.AI for $2.5 billion.

Section 2.1: The Strategic Value of AI Companions

Innovative projects within large companies often prioritize broader strategic objectives over immediate revenue. Google X, known for developing Google Glass and Waymo, exemplifies this philosophy.

Excluding the more dubious aspects of the AI companion industry, such as data exploitation, the most logical strategic use for AI companions would be to provide conversational data for training AI models. However, even this potential is limited, as the nature of data generated may not meet the necessary criteria for effective AI training.

Experts from Tencent, SenseTime, and Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) have articulated what constitutes "high-quality data." According to their findings, such data should demonstrate diversity and fluidity across various text types, including news articles, literature, poetry, and scientific works. Additionally, the content must be legal and devoid of bias.

Unfortunately, dialogues generated by AI companions often lean towards emotional content, potentially involving themes of sexuality and bias, which could taint AI training datasets.

As of late August, reports indicated that major players like Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft were vying for new funding for OpenAI, which has surpassed a valuation of $100 billion, solidifying its status as a leading entity in the AI domain. However, OpenAI itself grapples with commercialization challenges and appears to be seeking more opportunities in the B2B sector.

It is evident that companies engaged in developing large models or AI applications are constantly asking how to monetize their innovations. While AI companions might appear to offer a quick route to profitability, they may be better suited for smaller startups willing to take risks. The "narrow gate within a narrow gate" clearly does not align with the operational models of large internet corporations.

Perhaps, as the saying goes, adults never make choices. The future may well involve utilizing both Replika and ChatGPT—one catering to emotional needs and the other enhancing work efficiency—as a new paradigm in the AI landscape.
